The Bugna Goat Project A project of the Boston Livestock Group and Human Development Foundation |
|
The Pakistan Earthquake of October, 2005 happened eight months ago, but its devastating effects still continue.
The disaster wiped out whole cities and villages. It killed over 83,000 people and 500,000 domestic animals. Those animals: donkeys, mules, horses, buffaloes, cows and goats represented the wealth of the people in the earthquake zone.
The loss of their milk animals has left many survivors destitute. Milk from their buffaloes, cows and goats had nourished them and their children, and provided them with a small income. With their animals gone, they can’t meet the nutritional needs of their families, and they can’t get back on their feet.
The Boston Livestock Group was created to address this problem. We are launching a pilot program to provide two healthy, vaccinated milk goats to the poorest families in six villages in Kashmir. To help our gift keep growing, we are asking the villagers who receive goats to donate their first two offspring back to the program, to be given to other needy families.
To implement our project, we have teamed up with Human Development Foundation, a pioneering 501(c)(3) organization headquartered in Chicago that has been working with the underprivileged in Pakistan for nine years. Immediately after the disaster, HDF adopted the Bugna Village Complex, a group of six villages in Kashmir, with a population of over 8,000 people. HDF has already provided the villagers with safe temporary housing, helped them to rebuild, and built schools and a hospital. Now it’s time to help the people recover economically.
A pair of vaccinated goats for one family will cost $275. Please give as much as you can. Checks can be made out to: Human Development Foundation. On the memo line, write: Boston Livestock Group—Bugna Goat Progect. |
